Institute for Excellence in Writing
Teacher Feature showcases a program, project or curriculum that is being implemented during the school year.
This week's Teacher Feature is from Mrs. Christine Joyce (Dean of Curriculum and Grade 1-2) who explains The Institute of Excellence in Writing.
This year's middle school and high school English program features a wonderful writing curriculum entitled Teaching Writing: Structure and Style published by the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW). Even the most reluctant writers are learning to write well!
By laying the groundwork with structural models, textual analysis, and stylistic techniques, our students are learning how to think clearly and to write effectively, thereby preparing them for a lifetime of successful communication. Mirroring what Benjamin Franklin called a 'method in the arrangement of thoughts,' the IEW approach first teaches through imitation, then by emphasizing the canons of classical rhetoric: Invention, arrangement, elocution, memory, and delivery.
Thanks to IEW's intensive training seminar this past summer, all of our core teachers are ready to guide our students in becoming skillful, confident writers.
