Adult Catechism: Sin, Virtue and the Sacraments

As a Catholic, our life is a journey towards heaven. While traversing the holy path, this Catechism class will review teachings many may have forgotten. We will dig into the nuances of Catholic catechesis, which can provide the tools to assist us in combating and understanding the conflicts, which have arose in the modern world.

  • Classes will coincide with the school calendar.

Class Topics:

  1. Week 1 The commandments 5 to 7 - It is not good to abuse animals, but it's also not good to treat them like humans. Can we steal food if we are starving?

  2. Week 2 The commandments 8 to 10 - The sin of destroying another's reputation. The obligation to repair another person's good name. The evils of socialism.

  3. Week 3 The works of mercy - What is the value of riches? Obligation of the wealthy to assist neighbors. Spiritual works of mercy.

  4. Week 4 Good works - What makes our work good? What determines the degree of the goodness of our works? What is a virtue?

  5. Week 5 Sin - What are the consequences of sin? How to escape addictions? How to escape sin and imperfections? The gravity of near occasions of sin.

  6. Week 6 Virtues - What does it mean to be patient? Do I possess all the aspects of patience? Does meekness mean that one is weak?

  7. Week 7 Attainment of perfection - Who is called to holiness? The eight beatitudes.

  8. Week 8 The Mass - What is the Mass essentially? Jewish roots of the Mass. What is a priest? How to participate in the Mass?

  9. Week 9 Baptism and Confirmation - The Necessity of Baptism for Salvation. What is Baptism of Desire? What is Limbo of the infants?

  10. Week 10 The Holy Eucharist and Confession - A philosophical explanation of the Eucharist. What is spiritual communion? What is the sin of relapse? How do indulgences work?

  11. Week 11 Extreme Unction and Holy Orders - Is anointing of the sick primarily about the body or the soul? What is a priest? What are the powers of a priest? What are the minor orders?

  12. Week 12 Marriage - What makes a valid marriage? What are the duties of the married? The difference between an annulment and a divorce. The Graces of marriage.

  13. Week 13 Prayer - What is and is not a prayer? The most important prayers? What determines the quality of our prayer? What is love? The importance of meditation. The importance of Retreats.

  14. Week 14 Extra time for classes that go longer - The above days list the topics that will be covered, but the days they are covered may differ depending on the questions and time to fully explain each topic.

For those not able to attend, all classes will be recorded and copies will be sent out each week.
